Screen Time: Understanding the Impact on Children's Health and Wellbeing

In today's digital age, screens have become an integral part of children's lives, from smartphones and tablets to televisions and computers. It is difficult to imagine a world devoid of them. While technology offers many educational and entertainment opportunities, concerns about the effects of screen time on children's health and development are growing. Understanding how screen time influences children's physical, mental and social well-being is crucial in guiding them toward a balanced and healthy relationship with technology.

Obesity and decreased physical activity: Excessive screen time leads to a sedentary lifestyle resulting in decreased physical activity and unhealthy snacking habits. It results in weight gain leading to obesity in children.

Sleep disturbances: Screen time before bed can interrupt sleep patterns, leading to sleep disorders and fatigue. Exposure to blue light emitted by screens, especially before bedtime, can interfere with the production of the sleep hormone melatonin, leading to poor sleep quality and insomnia.

Eye strain and vision problems: Prolonged screen time can lead to digital eye strain, causing discomfort, headaches, blurred vision and increase the risk of myopia (near-sightedness).

Mental health concerns: Excessive screen time has been linked to increased risk of depression, anxiety and other mental health concerns.

Social skills and relationships: Excessive screen time can negatively impact social skills and relationships, as children spend less time interacting face-to-face, leading to difficulties in developing interpersonal skills and building relationships. Spending too much time on screens, particularly on social media or gaming, can contribute to social isolation, reducing meaningful connections with family and peers.

Cognitive development: Excessive screen time has been associated with delayed cognitive development, including attention and language skills.

Addiction: Screen time can be addictive, leading to negative impacts on mental and physical health. Screen addiction, particularly to gaming and social media results in compulsive use that interferes with daily life and responsibilities.

Decreased attention span: Excessive screen time can lead to decreased attention span and reduced capability to focus. High screen time, especially with fast-paced content, can affect a child's ability to focus and may be linked to attention deficit issues.

Increased risk of cyberbullying: Spending more time online increases the risk of cyberbullying and online harassment.

Impact on academic performance: Excessive screen time can negatively impact academic performance and reduce educational outcomes by reducing time spent on homework and reading.

Posture Issues: Sitting for long periods with poor posture while using devices can lead to musculoskeletal problems such as back, neck and shoulder pain.

Decreased Emotional Regulation: Overuse of screens, particularly social media and video games, can impact emotional development, leading to difficulties in managing emotions and increased irritability.

Delayed Language Development: For younger children, excessive screen time, especially passive viewing can delay language development by reducing face-to-face interactions and opportunities for verbal communication.

Behavioural Issues: Exposure to violent content in video games and media can increase aggressive thoughts and behaviours in some children.

While moderate screen time can offer educational and entertainment value, excessive use can have significant impacts on children's physical, emotional, and cognitive development. The effects of screen time are undeniable. However, it is essential to remember that screens are an integral part of modern life and complete elimination is not a realistic or necessary solution. Instead, we must strive for a healthy balance that allows our children to harness the benefits of technology while minimizing its risks. By setting healthy boundaries and being mindful of content, we can help children enjoy the benefits of technology while minimizing the potential downsides.
